GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 10th. July, 1917.

124

Sir.

I have the honour to forward for your in-

-formation a copy of a letter from the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce on the subject of the education of Chinese under British influence in China.

24

The subject is one of great interest to this Government and I have consulted the Executive Council on the project of establishing such a school as is referred to by the Chamber of Commerce. The Council have recorded the opinion, which I venture to endorse, that should His Majesty's Govern- -ment at any future time decide to assist financially such a scheme the Hongkong Government would be glad of permission to participate in affording financial support.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

RIGHT HONDURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.
